Our September event was held at Old Chicago with Kerry sharing about adult literacy. She does have a packet of information if you are interested. Did you know there is a Adult Education and Family Literacy week? Me neither.
Kerry shared that anyone that can't read would look at a page of writing as if someone that can read is looking at a page of writing in a different language....think about it...I speak and read English, but if I couldn't and I picked up a page written in English, I would be perplexed just as if it were written in Chinese, Japanese or French....below is a visual Kerry shared...really hit home for me!
Those that came to the meeting also brought books to donate to the Ankeny Head Start program. Oh, I see some I remember from when I was young...or well, at least when my son was younger!
We also brought books for a swap between people. That's always fun!
Each person shared what their favorite book or author was. Here's a few sharing their favoritess. I overheard Peggy say after hearing about some of these authors, she now has several new titles to find at the library!
To round out the night about literacy we made....what else....bookmarks (quite a good tie in, don't you think). We had inking stamps that were flip flops (i.e. thongs), and stickers too! Here's Deb with her finished product.
Our new director, Peggy Hoemann, shared a bit about how she's hoping to focus in 2011 on making an impact in our community every month. Some months we may end up with regular meetings for the "girls get together" and then be doing a community impact event on another night, and some months the impact may be on our regularly scheduled night. Let's think outside the box of Monday night! Peggy will be sharing more at the October meeting.
Don't forget to mark your calendars for October....
4th - regular meeting, place TBA...watch the blog
23rd - Halloween costume...we'll finalize details at the meeting on the 4th.
